Reasons to Consider Implant Dentistry When Replacing Teeth

Implant DentistryThere are a few things that make implant dentistry such an excellent option for replacing missing teeth. If you are considering doing so in 2018, it is important to learn more about your options and the various ways this procedure can improve your long-term oral health. Here is what you should know.

1. Implant dentistry allows us to permanently replace missing teeth

This is important to note that in comparison with other options like a fixed dental bridge or dentures, dental implants are the sturdier and stronger option. Since an implant is the only solution that we surgically place into the jaw, it is the only one that is technically permanent. While an implant may become loose after several years, this is rare. Most people can continue to use the implant throughout their lifetime.

2. Placing dental implants is beneficial for the health of the jaw bone

Many people do not realize that when tooth loss occurs, the jaw bone can begin to suffer from resorption. This is the process where calcium is leached from the jaw for use in other areas of the body. The reason this can be devastating is that once the calcium is gone, the shape of the jaw and face can change. Additionally, the bone will be less secure for the remaining teeth, creating the risk for future tooth loss as well.

It is, therefore, critical to replace teeth as quickly as possible and to do so with implants when that is an option. Since the actual implant is a titanium post that is inserted into the gums and secured to the jaw bone, it provides the same or similar level of stimulation that a natural root and tooth does. This ensures that the jaw can remain strong.

3. Dental implants are the most natural looking and behaving solution

One of the biggest benefits of implant dentistry is that implants look like natural teeth and behave like them as well. This means that they are strong, durable and will create a beautiful smile. It is nearly impossible for anyone to tell if a tooth is an implanted one or a tooth that is naturally occurring. It truly is the most beautiful restorative solution. Also, since they behave like natural teeth, they only need to be brushed and flossed like natural teeth.

This means that there are no additional care instructions associated with dental implants – something that is appreciated by patients who have previously worn dentures and found them to be terribly inconvenient. Seriously – all that is necessary is a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss.

4. They are long-lasting

It takes longer to place implants than it does to place a dental bridge or to receive dentures. However, this initial investment of time is well worth it because of how long-lasting dental implants are. They can last for a person's lifetime or at least for over a decade.
